A church-based homeless shelter in Middletown remains busy as 22 residents received assistance from the bitter cold temperatures and wintry mix on Sunday night.

Serving Homeless Alternate Housing Of Middletown (SHALOM) just completed its sixth week of its 15-week schedule, said Bill Fugate, one of the coordinators. The agency has served 56 homeless guests, including 31 males, 20 females and five children.

Holy Family is hosting the homeless for the next two weeks, Fugate said.

He praised the volunteers who have served the homeless and the area churches that have opened their doors and made their facilities available.

“Our churches, volunteers and supporters are just tools that Christ uses to serve those who are lost and hurting,” he wrote in an email. “Just imagine how much more difficult it would be for our guests if you did not make yourselves and your churches available to those outside of the church.”

Last year, SHALOM set two records: Total clients (117) and number of females served, Fugate said. Before last year, the record was 89, set in 2015-16.

Intakes are conducted every day from 4 to 5 p.m. at First United Methodist Church, 120 S. Broad St. Then a van transports the homeless to a different host church where volunteers provide a dinner and breakfast and lodging. Every morning the homeless are transported back to the SHALOM office.
