Grant to fund 24/7 EMS service in Ross

ROSS TWP. — The Ross Twp. Fire Department will be able to staff its stations around the clock starting in October, thanks to a new federal grant.

The two-year, $289,668 staffing grant was accepted by township trustees this month. It will allow the department to hire four new part-time firefighters/paramedics, according to Ross Twp. Fire Chief Steve Miller.

This will add to the department’s current roster of 25 part-time staff and 27 volunteers.

Currently, the township’s two fire stations are manned only during the day, and rely solely on volunteers from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. Monday through Thursday, Miller said.

“This will allow us to have people on station 24/7,” Miller said. “We’ll be able to have a quicker response time.

“In these tough economic times, local governments are trying to balance public safety with limited resources,” Miller said. “This money will enhance public safety at no cost to the Ross Twp. taxpayers.”

The township also received a $5,950 state grant that will be used for training and medical supplies.

Miller said the fire department has received close to $1 million in state and federal grants since 2004.

“We’ve been pretty fortunate,” he said.
