Fenwick grad named Kettering judge

James “Jim” Long, a 1977 Bishop Fenwick High School graduate, was sworn in this week as Kettering Municipal Court’s newest judge.

Long was sworn in by Jamar T. King, Esq., an attorney with the Thompson-Hine law firm. Long and King met when King was a fifth-grader playing on a youth basketball team coached by Long. Long’s wife, Dr. Suzette Myton Long, held the Bible during the ceremony.

A resident of Centerville/Washington Twp,. Long was appointed by Ohio Gov. John R. Kasich to replace Judge Thomas Hanna, who retired on Nov. 30, 2014.

Long received a bachelor’s degree from Ohio Northern University and earned his Juris Doctorate from Ohio State University Moritz College of Law.

In 1984, he began a private law practice, serving the Cincinnati/Dayton area. In 1995, he joined the Montgomery County Public Defender’s Office as an Assistant Public Defender. In 2000, Long was named Kettering Municipal Court Prosecutor, prosecuting cases for the City of Kettering, the City of Centerville and for Washington Twp. He has been a full-time prosecutor at the Kettering Municipal Court for 15 years.

Long has been recognized with the DorWood Optimist Club’s “Respect for Law Award.” He has also volunteered for 30 years as a youth basketball coach in Middletown, Dayton and with the South Dayton Knights basketball club based in Kettering.

An active member of the community, Long has served in a number of roles including Mock Trial Coach and Adviser at Dunbar High School, and as a guest lecturer at area middle schools and high schools helping students gain awareness on the topics of law and government. Long has also led youth service retreats to assist residents who are elderly or who have disabilities with home maintenance and other household tasks.

He is son of Frank and Jeanne Long of Middletown.
