A vacant former pet store in the Hamilton neighborhood of Lindenwald was destined to be another empty building until a local family stepped in.

Superpetz closed the store in 2010 at 4020 Pleasant Ave.

But some elbow grease and an idea to open a flea market in Hamilton with low-priced clothes, home décor and other items for sale prevented the former Superpetz from becoming an eyesore.

After watching the 20,000-square-foot building sit empty, cousins Jeff Mobley and Mike Partin, along with Jennifer Mobley, Shawnda Partin, and their aunt Cheryl Tilford, decided to lease the space on Pleasant Avenue in May 2013 and open a flea market. They had success selling goods at the yearly 127 Yard Sale — which claims to be the world’s longest yard sale held every August stretching from Michigan to Alabama along U.S. 127 — and wanted to take the next step of opening a permanent storefront.

“Everybody has stuff they want to get rid of,” Shawnda Partin said.

All last summer they cleaned, scrubbed and painted the store. A leaky roof had caused water damage and floor tiles had to be replaced. The air conditioning unit had been stolen, and the family bought and installed a new one.

The family opened the new flea market, “Pleasant Treasures,” for business Thanksgiving weekend last year.

“It’s taken a whole team,” ShawndaPartin said. “One thing people say when they walk in is it’s clean.”

Pleasant Treasures has vendors who sell their own items and collect their own money. Store operators also sell things on consignment, collecting commission on items they sell for other people.

Store hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, with live bluegrass music on Sundays.

Booths are still available for vendors to rent. Call 513-889-1754 for more information.

The difference is “day and night,” Jeff Mobley said.

“It’s gratifying, but it’s a work in progress,” Mike Partin said.

Vendors Sherri and Jesse Knapp of Fairfield opened Mom and Pop Gift Shop at Pleasant Treasures, along with a website, to sell jewelry, watches and home furnishings.

“We’re new to this as well,” Sherri Knapp said.

There’s “more people every weekend,” Jesse Knapp said.
