Three union contracts down, two to negotiate for the Fairfield administration.

City Council earlier this week approved the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Local 3646, which follows the same format as the contracts approved by the International Association of Firefighters Local 4010 and the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 20.

AFSCME Local 3646 union members will receive a 2.5 percent base wage increase for the first year of the contract with a re-opener in January 2018 for wages in the second and third year of the contract, and negotiates for health benefits in the contract’s third year.

This union contract is effective as of April 1 and expires on March 31, 2020.

The AFSCME union represents a range of city employees including employees in the public works and utilities, parks, and development services departments.

“Approximately 90 employees are currently represented by the unit,” said Assistant City Manager Greg Preece. “This is our largest employee bargaining unit.”

The contract equates to about a $129,000 annual increase, he said.

Negotiations with the two police bargaining unions — — will be the last two for the city. Preece said the last meeting with the police union had to be rescheduled but had to be rescheduled due to a conflict with a union member’s schedule.

The Journal-News reached out to the union representatives for AFSCME Local 3646 and the FOP unions, but they could not be reached before deadline.
