Earth Day began on April 22, 1970, which is said to have launched the modern environmental movement. And it's estimated that more than 1 billion people participate in Earth Day activities annually.
Duke Energy is participating in Earth Day in the city of Fairfield and Liberty Twp. Tim Abbott, director of government and community relations for Duke Energy, said, “The environment and our corporate volunteerism are very important to Duke Energy.”
In Fairfield, a ceremony and tree planting will happen at 1 p.m.today at Huffman Park, 2100 John Gray Road. This is the second Earth Day celebration at Huffman Park.
Duke Energy has donated five trees to be planted at the park. A black gum tree will be planted during the ceremony, but the city will also plant three red oaks and a cedar tree.
In Hamilton, the city and county will have more than 20 state, regional and local environmental organizations and other exhibitors at the Hamilton Earth Day Event. Participants can learn about recycling, resource conservation and awareness of local environmental issues. The free expo, which is set for 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. today at 345 High St., is sponsored by the Hamilton to New Baltimore Groundwater Consortium, MillerCoors, Butler County Soil and Water Conservation District and the Butler County Storm Water District.
Free grilled hot dogs, burgers, snacks and giveaways will be available at the event.
In Liberty Twp., Duke Energy has collaborated with the community to plant seven new trees at 10 a.m. today at Dudley Memorial Park, 5700 Yankee Road. Four autumn blaze and three October glory trees will be planted.
In Middletown, Keep Middletown Beautiful Inc. and the city will hold a festival Saturday to celebrate Earth Day. The festival, located at One Donham Plaza, will feature speakers, booths for local community and environmental organizations, and hands-on activities.
Volunteers will clean up designated areas of the city beginning at 8 a.m. Saturday before returning to the plaza at noon with a volunteer luncheon at the municipal building.
In West Chester Twp., the Shepherd Color Company is making the donation at 9 a.m. Saturday of 40 trees at Keehner Park. The tree planting event will feature volunteers from the company, their families and West Chester Twp. park crews.
In many areas of the county, Ohio Valley Goodwill and Middletown-based Cohen Electronics Recycling will celebrate the third annual Goodwill Earth Day Recycling Event from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday at all Goodwill donation locations. Organizers hope to collect 75,000 pounds of electronics to be recycled during the event.
