A man reported as having escaped from Indiana authorities was found at the Oxford T.J. Maxx store on South Locust Street at 6:55 p.m. June 8. Officers were informed of the man’s presence by a Union County, Indiana, Sheriff’s deputy, according to a police report.

Michael Dwayne Adams, 33, was identified as the man who had escaped and had warrants out of Fayette County, Indiana.

Adams had spotted the Union County deputy and run from the store toward the Oxford West Apartments. An Oxford officer saw him behind a vehicle and approached him, but Adams fled when the officer attempted to grab his arm. He fled through several parking lots of the complex but the officer caught up with him and took him to the ground near the street. As they struggled, Adams reportedly began reaching for his waistband but the deputy arrived and helped get hold of his arm.

A capped syringe was found in the suspect’s waistband and another Oxford officer arrived to assist in getting Adams handcuffed. He was placed in a cruiser but the officer who had captured him had an injured knee and could not put weight on his leg. Other officers arrived on the scene and a search incident to arrest produced a baggy of suspected heroin in Adams’ possession.

Adams began banging his head on the center divider of the vehicle and yelling profanities at the officers.

He was taken to the police department and the officer involved in the struggle went to McCullough-Hyde Memorial Hospital for evaluation. The syringe and suspected heroin were placed into evidence and will be sent to the lab.

Additional charges for the syringe and suspected heroin, fleeing and potential injury to an officer are expected once further identification is confirmed. Adams was taken to the Butler County Jail.
