In the world of the Korean martial art of Tae Kwon Do, one of the five core tenets to which students adhere calls for having an indomitable spirit, or Baekjeol Bulgul.

Having the courage to persevere, to never let your spirit be crushed is the essence of the fifth tenet and what connects students of Han’s White Tiger Tae Kwon Do in Liberty Twp. with children receiving treatment through Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center.

“This community opened its arms to our school,” said Master Sang Won Han, owner of Han’s White Tiger and a former member of the South Korean National Tae Kwon Do Team. “What better way to say thank you than to help a child.”

Han’s White Tiger students are volunteering hundreds of hours to raise money for the school’s 5th annual Break-A-Thon for Children’s Hospital and practice equally the same in preparation for the high-flying kicks and board-breaking demonstration, the culminating event to their year-long fundraiser. And this year, Han’s is providing an additional treat — an athletic performance by the Yong In University Demonstration Team from South Korea.

There also will be stilt walker/jugglers, a living statue, carnival games, face painting, bouncy houses, raffles, and local celebrities and county and township officials who will get to break a few boards of their own.

The martial arts school’s goal this year is to raise $18,000. Since opening in 2011, Han’s White Tiger has raised more than $42,000 for Cincinnati Children’s Hospital. Han’s also conducts food-drives for local homeless shelters and is involved in a variety of charity work throughout the community and Cincinnati area.

Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center is dedicated to ensuring that all children receive quality healthcare, regardless of a family’s ability to pay, said Megan Boesing, Cincinnati Children’s Donor Relations officer.

“Giving Hope events are a fun way to support the medical center,” Boesing said. “Every gift, no matter the size, has an impact on the kids and families we serve. As a nonprofit organization, Cincinnati Children’s relies on the support of our friends and partners in the community, like Han’s White Tiger, to help us advance research and improve care. Together, we are helping to change the outcome for kids here in Cincinnati and around the world.”

Boesing said Han’s White Tiger’s continued support for children in medical need through its annual Break-A-Thon helps families throughout the Cincinnati area.

“This fun community event has impacted the lives of so many children and their families,” she said. “We’re grateful for the continued support of Cincinnati Children’s and our mission.”

A vital part of the school’s curriculum, Han said, is participation in fundraising for the hospital, as well as volunteer work at area soup kitchens and schools.

“It is very important to give back, to try and make a difference,” he said.
