Avid Butler County athlete, ranger at Potter’s Park dies at age 78

Linvel W. Smith, 78, of Fairfield, died Saturday. He was an avid athlete and a ranger at Hamilton’s Potter’s Park golf course who also loved watching his children and grandchildren participate in sports.

An avid athlete from Fairfield who loved cheering for his children and grandchildren in their sporting endeavors has died.

Linvel W. Smith, 78, died Saturday at home surrounded by his family.

He played golf for many years and worked as a ranger at Potter’s Park golf course in Hamilton.

His “pride and joy” was following his two sons, Randy and Doug, members of the 1980 state champion Ross High School boys basketball team, according to his obituary.

He was a member of East River Road Baptist Church and he retired from SOS Steel after 30 years of service.

He is survived by his sons Randy (Kimberly) Smith, Doug (Anita) Smith; siblings Glen Smith and Fern (Cecil) Mallard-Daniel; grandchildren Brandon, Shaun, Spencer and Brooke; sister-in-law Jewell Smith; and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents Estill and Gracie Smith; his wife of 54 years, M. Jeanette Smith; brother Basil Smith; in-laws Bill Mallard and Pamela Smith.

Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Brown Dawson Flick Funeral Home, 1350 Milllville Ave., Hamilton with Pastors Arvil Jones and Vernon Morris officiating.

Burial will follow at Greenwood Cemetery.
