169th Butler County Fair: What to expect from this year’s event

The Butler County Fair is set to begin on July 21 in Hamilton, returning for its 169th year. While many of the classic events like the rodeo and tractor pull will reappear this year, fairgoers also have new activities to look forward to, officials said.

Highlighting the fair’s first day is the new addition of the monster trucks, which will start at 5:30 p.m. Attendees can go for a ride at 5:30 before the show begins at 7 p.m. The show costs $10 for adults and $3 for children between the ages of 6 and 12.

Doug Turner, entering his fifth year as fair president, said the idea has been discussed over the years and was finally prepared at the Ohio Fair Managers Association Convention this January.

Judging for the Junior Fair King and Queen Contest will be on July 11, the first year that the contest will be held prior to fair week. Turner said the board decided to move up the contest because so many participate in the contest and many of those participants are involved with other activities during the week.

Turner and the board are hoping for nice weather and to reach new heights in weekly attendance.

“We have about 80,000 to 90,000 come usually,” Turner said. “This year, we’d love to break it and reach about 100,000.”

The Demolition Derby will follow the monster truck show on Monday and will also return for Friday. Both shows will start at 7 p.m.

This year’s special attractions include the Farm Zone, running Sunday through Saturday, the Milking Parlor from Monday to Friday, the Broken Horn Rodeo on Wednesday, among others. Wednesday is also Veteran’s Day, on which seniors and veterans will get in for free.

The Farm Zone will have a daily theme from 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., starting with Farm Bureau Day and ending with Farm Zone Day.

The Cincinnati Circus will return for its third year on Saturday, July 27, the fair’s last event for the season. It comes at no additional cost, except for the general admission cost of $8 per adult and $3 for every accompanied child between the ages of 6 and 12.

The fair will begin at 7 a.m. and end at 11 p.m. each day Sunday through Saturday. It is located at 1715 Fairgrove Avenue.
