Another retired police officer, W. Dale Curtis, died Jan. 2 at Atrium Medical Center. He was 74.
Sorrell worked in the patrol division for most of his 29-year career, said Police Chief Rodney Muterspaw. During his time on patrol, he worked a traffic unit and drove one of the department’s Harley Davidson motorcycles. He had also received a purple heart award for an on-duty injury, Muterspaw said.
After his retirement in 1981, he returned to the police department and worked as the downtown parking control officer for many years.
Two of Sorrell’s sons followed him into public safety.
Wendell Sorrell was a Middletown police officer and his brother, Dennis, was a Middletown firefighter. Both are retired.
Funeral arrangements are pending for Sorrell. His daughter, Gaye, died on Christmas Day and her funeral service will be held at the same time as her father’s.
The Middletown Honor Guard will participate in the funeral.
