The fact that four hospitals in Butler and Warren counties earned a spot on Healthgrades America’s Best Hospitals list is good news for residents, officials said.

But it’s also a source of pride for the area hospitals — Mercy Health-Fairfield Hospital, Atrium Medical Center, Fort Hamilton Hospital and West Chester Hospital — that are recipients of the award, which rank them among the 250 best hospitals representing the top 5 percent of hospitals in the nation.

Healthgrades identifies hospitals that have superior clinical performance and patient outcomes and recognizes these best-performing hospitals with excellence awards. Patients at recognized hospitals have fewer complications and are more likely to survive their hospital stay.

Mercy Health-Fairfield Hospital’s spot on America’s 100 Best Hospitals represents the top 2 percent of hospitals in the nation for exhibiting clinical excellence year over year. This is the third consecutive year the hospital has earned that distinction.

That, said Tom Urban, the hospital’s president and CEO, is “a source of pride” for the hospital and a recognition that is derived from publicly reported data versus some awards and recognitions that are “pay to play.”

“It represents an objective third party affirmation from a nationally respected organization, Healthgrades, that the care we provide at Mercy Health-Fairfield Hospital is among the best in the nation,” Urban said.

Such awards “provide a source of pride for our employees and a high level of confidence from our patients that they and their loved ones will receive the best possible care in the nation,” Urban said.

Earning spots in America’s 250 Best Hospitals are Atrium Medical Center, Fort Hamilton Hospital and West Chester Hospital, representing the top 5 percent in the nation for overall clinical excellence for the current year.

This is the fifth consecutive year Atrium Medical Center has been ranked by Healthgrades as one of America’s 250 Best Hospitals.

Dr. Keith Bricking, president of the Middletown hospital and Warren County’s only trauma center, said the ranking – along with the hospital’s recent Magnet Recognition — “reflects Atrium Medical Center’s commitment and ability to serve the community with nationally-recognized levels of high-quality care.”

“Atrium caregivers go to great lengths to ensure patients receive quality care, and this award is a testament to their diligent, compassionate work.”

This is the second consecutive year that Fort Hamilton Hospital has received the award

“It is such an honor to receive this award,” said Ron Connovich, president of Fort Hamilton Hospital. “We have been very diligent in placing keen focus on patient experience, quality and safety. We have an exemplary, highly-engaged team of physicians, nurses and staff who deliver superior care to our community that lead to excellent patient outcomes.

Connovich said the award is “a true testament” that validates Fort Hamilton’s commitment to its patients and their loved ones.

This is the fourth consecutive year that UC Health’s West Chester Hospital has been ranked by Healthgrades in the top 5 percent of hospitals in the nation for clinical excellence.

“For West Chester Hospital and UC Health, receiving this award brings external validation for the constant focus our teams place on elevating quality of care standards in not just one or two specialties, but across multiple care areas,” said Amanda Nageleisen, a UC Health spokeswoman. “It confirms that all of our efforts to provide the safest possible quality care are actually making a difference and producing better outcomes for our patients.

She said all the various awards and recognitions in aggregate send “a strong message” to the hospital’s patients and the communities it serves that its employees and physicians are committed to building and enhancing a culture of patient-centered care.

In Ohio, three hospitals — Bethesda North Hospital (Cincinnati), Christ Hospital (Cincinnati) and ProMedica Toledo Hospital — made it into America’s 50 Best Hospitals. Those institutions are in the top 1 percent of hospitals in the nation for consistently providing overall clinical excellence across a broad spectrum of conditions and procedures year over year.

Hospitals across Ohio are committed to health care quality and they are constantly working to provide effective practices and best strategies for patient care, according to John Palmer, a spokesman for Ohio Hospital Association.

“Patients should use all available tools at their disposal to identify which health care decisions are right for them,” Palmer said. “This is one of many consumer-based ratings programs offered and when making health care decisions, patients should use all available tools at their disposal such as talking with friends and family and consulting with doctors, nurses and other health care providers.”
