A Middletown school had ordered children off a playground today as police investigated a shooting in the adjacent neighborhood but the security precaution is now over, said school officials.

Rosa Parks Elementary had ordered students to leave the school playground around noon and return inside the building, said Middletown Schools spokesperson Elizabeth Beadle.

“There is police activity in the area so we pulled the kids off the playground. The students were free to move about inside the building as normal,” said Beadle.

“We took the action on the advice of the school’s SRO (school resource officer),” she said of the armed city police officers that work in the city schools.

Beadle said city police have since advised all is clear and students are now back outside on the playground.

The school, which is at 1210 Verity Parkway in the southern portion of the Butler County city, is near Barnitz Stadium.
