A crash has left two Edgewood High School athletes with serious injuries as their Butler County community rallies to support them.

The two were in a 3 a.m. crash Wednesday in Fairfield near state Route 4 and Symmes Road.

Edgewood School officials said the two – sophomore Savannah Schlueter, 16, who was driving and junior Caila Nagel, 17 – “were seriously injured in a car accident early on Wednesday (and) both hospitalized at University of Cincinnati Medical Center.”

Hospital officials did not immediately respond Thursday to a request on the girls’ conditions.

Fairfield police said they are still investigating the crash, which involved another vehicle. The driver of the other vehicle, Samantha Harvey, is facing OVI charges in connection with the collision, according to Fairfield Court records.

Dozens of classmates and families held vigils praying for the two girls’ recovery from their injuries.

Nagel is a basketball, volleyball and lacrosse player, and Schlueter plays volleyball and lacrosse and is a cheerleader for Edgewood, said Pam Pratt, spokeswoman for the school district.

“Our high school counselors are prepared and available to speak with our Edgewood High School students and staff to provide emotional support,” said Pratt.

Several GoFundMe pages have been established to assist these families with their medical expenses.

“We also ask our Edgewood community to keep Caila, Savannah, and their families in their prayers as well as our students and staff on this National Day of Prayer and in the days and weeks ahead,” said Pratt.
