It took three years of fundraising totaling $40,000 and this week the unveiling of the two new playgrounds at the school’s campus at 4700 River Road was expected to draw many from throughout the Butler County community who donated to help see them built.
“It has been an amazing journey the last three years in fundraising for the playgrounds,” said Fairfield West Principal Missy Muller.
“Students, families and over 40 local businesses have contributed to our Walk-a-thon to raise the money. This year was our biggest year of fund raising and we could not be prouder,” said Muller.
“Students raised money and were rewarded immediately by getting to put a pie in the custodians face, watch the assistant principal eat ‘dog food’ and then when we reached our goal I slept on the roof with one of the PTC ((Parents and Teachers for Children) presidents in the cold and rain for the night,” she said recalling the many fundraisers.
“It was so fun to have students and families come and see us and they brought food and goodies too. I will never forget the enthusiastic students that evening and the generosity of the families at West,” she said.
“The West community is truly a family and we work together to create a positive loving environment that support each other. These playgrounds would not be possible without them,” said Muller.
The outpouring of donations by the Fairfield West community is indicative of the support for local schools throughout the 10,000-student Butler County community, said school district officials.
Fairfield Schools Spokeswoman Gina Gentry-Fletcher said “time and again our school community steps up to make great things happen in our schools.”
“We are proud of the effort made by all staff and families at West, especially the PTC organization and area businesses, for their hard work in bringing this project to fruition,” said Gentry-Fletcher.
“For three years they were committed to providing a fun space for the children to enjoy. They accomplished that goal and should take great pride in their work,” she said.
