A suspect has been charged in the shooting death of a Hamilton man in June.

Cameron Treitay Kidd Wilson, 21, of Harrison, was taken into custody Friday at his Hamilton County residence and charged with murder and felonious assault for the slaying of Darrian K. Shamel on June 2.

Wilson was booked into the Butler County Jail on Friday evening. According to court records, he was indicted last month by a grand jury and is scheduled to be arraigned Thursday in Butler County Common Pleas Court.

In 2020, 18 homicide cases were handled by the Butler County Coroner’s Office, including a triple homicide in Middletown in March. A man and woman were found shot to death in a car. The woman was pregnant at the time of her death, according to the coroner’s office.

Officers were called to the 700 block of Charlton about about 12:15 a.m. on June 2 and found Shamel had been shot. Shamel, 22, was transported to Fort Hamilton Hospital, where he died.

The Butler County Coroner’s Office said Shamel died of gunshot wounds.

A woman placed a 911 call and said an intruder had shot her son.

“Someone just barged in and shot my son,” the caller said. “I need an ambulance right away.”

When the dispatcher asked if he was conscious, the woman answered, “he is still breathing. He is gasping.”

As the dispatcher gathered information for police and paramedics en route, the mother said while crying, “Darrian? Ma’am he is gone. He’s gone.”

Shamel’s homicide was one of two in Hamilton during June. James M. Williams, 38, of Hamilton was reportedly shot in the 500 block of North Ninth Street on Jun 27. Multiple 911 calls were received reporting a victim had been shot in the chest, according to scanner traffic. Williams was transported to Fort Hamilton Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

In July, Hamilton police Chief Craig Bucheit said the homicides are not related. Williams’ homicide remains unsolved.

The city’s last homicide of the year happened on the night of Dec. 27. Daiquon Peterson, 25, of Lane Street, died at a Dayton Hospital from a gunshot wound to the head. Peterson was shot about 8:20 p.m. in a vehicle in the 2300 block of Dixie Highway. There have been no arrests.
