Members of the Butler Philharmonic Orchestra will bring Meet the Music 2 to audiences of all ages as part of the Fitton Family Fridays performance series.

Members of the Butler Philharmonic Orchestra will give kids an insider’s look at the instruments they play and show how the various sounds come together as “Meet the Music 2″ returns to the Fitton Center for Creative Arts stage in February.

“Building upon the success of last year’s event, Meet the Music 2 is a great opportunity to connect with classical music,” said Ian MacKenzie-Thurley, executive director of the Fitton Center, which is in Hamilton.

He said this will be a hands-on learning experience, so the musicians will be showing off different instruments, what those instruments sound like, and how those individual sounds come together to create a piece of music. Audiences will also have a chance to meet the musicians.

“It’s seeing a real cello, a French horn, a double bass or a bassoon. These instruments are unusual. Sometimes, they look weird, or sound funny, but when they come together, they make magnificent music, and there’s a great history to learn about,” MacKenzie-Thurley said.

Before the start of the production, there will be a complimentary reception by Two Women in a Kitchen with kid-friendly appetizers and drinks that will be served in the Carruthers Signature Ballroom at 6:30 p.m.

Youth will also have a chance to go behind-the-scenes and interact with the actors, performers, and musicians. They’ll learn more about what it’s like to rehearse for a play or a musical. And there is a Q & A session after the show, so kids can ask questions, and find out what it takes to play an instrument and to be a musician for an orchestra.
