HAMILTON — A showing of “The Rocky Horror Picture Show,” complete with a shadow cast performance from The Denton Affair will return to the Fitton Center for Creative Arts just in time for Halloween.

“Over many years, we’ve been very successfully doing ‘The Rocky Horror Picture Show’ here, and we’ve done it on the weekend closest to Halloween. Last year, we were able to work with The Denton Affair, who are a shadow cast performance, and it was completely sold out. People had the most outrageous time. It was fantastic. It was incredibly well received, and we immediately booked them again for this year,” said Ian MacKenzie-Thurley, executive director at the Fitton Center.

The Denton Affair can be seen regularly at The Esquire Theatre, which serves as the cast’s home theater. With the show, audiences can expect a live, acted, interactive performance with the actors in costume on the stage while the film is showing. Audience members also participate.

A shadow cast performance can be described as a play or musical where the actors act out the movie right in front of the screen and they do their best to match the actions in the film.

The Denton Affair was founded in 1979 by Scott Mallon and Tony Wright. The current cast is comprised of about 40 people from all over the Greater Cincinnati area. The cast performs every other Saturday at The Esquire Theatre in Clifton at midnight. Details about upcoming shows are posted on The Denton Affair’s social media @thedentonaffair and their website at www.thedentonaffair.org.

“The Rocky Horror Picture Show,” a 1975 musical comedy horror movie, is an audience participation film. This means moviegoers will get out of their seats, sing-along, dance on stage, throw things in the theater and more. Guests are encouraged to dress up as characters from the movie or for the “Time Warp.” (The film is rated R with adult themes.)

MacKenzie-Thurley said the film’s late-night screenings are something that has endured nearly 50 years after its original theatrical release.

“It’s quirky, it’s crazy, it’s fun ... and people come to have an enjoyable time. Most importantly, as an audience member, it’s interactive. We have the shadow cast as well, but you can talk back to the film, sing back to the film, you can throw rice at the wedding, and you squirt bottles in the rain, and we encourage all of that at the Fitton Center,” he said.

“The Rocky Horror Picture Show” is the first film of the Fitton Cinema this season. The Fitton Center will host “pop-up” cinema movie showings throughout the 2023-2024 season. Attendees can expect the movie showings to be packed with holiday themes, special presentations and other surprises.
