A Choir Sing-Off, which will feature three youth and three adult choirs from Butler and Warren counties, will be held Dec. 18 at Dave Finkelman Auditorium on the Miami University Middletown campus. Due to the popularity of the event that drew a standing-room only crowd two years ago at the Sorg Opera House, the signing contest had to be moved, Kiser said.
The two winning choirs will receive $1,000, followed by $750 for second and $500 for third. Application fee is $50 per choir and a five-minute video must be submitted by Sept. 15. A blind draw will determine the three choirs each competing in the two divisions.
Kiser said the Holiday Whopla board has expanded from three members to 12 and now she wants to add a youth board in hopes of giving young people an opportunity to volunteer on a non-profit project. She hopes to get representatives from all the local high schools: Middletown, Madison, Monroe, Fenwick, Middletown Christian, Edgewood, Butler Tech and home schoolers.
She said the youth board will offer students the chance to improve their college or career resumes. wants the students to “positively impact” their community.
They will learn interviewing skills, public speaking, professional networking, presentation development and marketing, according to Kiser.
Kiser expects the youth board to gain real-life experience and “bring energy” to the event.
It’s time, she said, to create the “next generation of doers.”
A 3.0 GPA or higher is required to apply and submissions are due by Sept.16.
