Middletown firefighters and departments from surrounding cities were at the scene of a Tytus Avenue house fire for several hours Wednesday.

The fire was reported about 12:20 p.m. in the 3400 block of Tytus Avenue. An “extreme hoarding” situation slowed down firefighters’ entry into the large two-story house, according to Capt. Frank Baughman, who is a fire marshal.

“We were met with extreme hoarder conditions. It took considerable amount of time to force and gain entry into the structure due to hoarder conditions,” Baughman said. “These conditions create such a challenge for us and a danger for us.”

There were reports that a resident was inside, but after searching, firefighters determined the house was empty. A resident later arrived at the scene and was unharmed, according to Baughman.

Fire damage was extensive on the first floor, but the entire house sustained smoke and water damage.

The cause of the fire was an extension cord being used as permanent wiring, officials said.
