Once water is restored, the affected area will be under a boil advisory. Such action is required because when water pressure drops below 20 pounds per square inch, bacterial contamination of the drinking water may be a possibility.e
City officials advise residents in the affected areas to either boil water for at least one full minute after water begins to bubble or to use bottled water for drinking and cooking.
Boiling water — including water used for brushing teeth, making ice and drinks, washing food, and even water for pets — kills harmful bacteria that could be in the water that can cause illness.
All ice made during a a boil advisory should be thrown away, as freezing does not kill bacteria.
After the advisory expires, residents are advised to flush house pipes, ice makers, hot water heaters, water softeners, garden hoses and change filters before using for drinking and cooking
Adults and teens may use water for bathing but should careful not to swallow water. Young children should be given a sponge bath since they often swallow water.
Dishwashers may only be used provided they feature a high-temperature cycle. Clothing may be washed without restriction.
The boiling advisory will remain in effect until a negative set of water samples are obtained, until further notice. When the water has been determined to be safe, an “All Clear” advisory will be issued.
The boiling advisory is a precautionary measure, city officials said, and the likelihood of contamination occurring is minimal.
