Doctors Michael and Andrea Moorehead started off in the eye care industry more than 30 years ago, but returned to Ohio even as business was booming in Texas.

The husband-wife team, who are celebrating the 25th anniversary of opening Hamilton Eyecare Center at 1360 Eaton Ave., said they enjoy the city’s diversity and the opportunity to help its residents see better.

“We see all ages from 1 to 99,” Michael Moorehead said. “I like that interaction with all different types of people and ages and backgrounds. Just the variety makes it fun and interesting.”

The business offers eye care, as well as professionally fit eyewear and contact lenses, both with “excellent warranties and no-gimmick competitive pricing.”

“We are definitely not the highest or lowest priced but we feel like we use the latest technology for lens design and lens material to make glasses for people at a price that is at a moderate level,” said Michael Moorehead said. “You won’t need a coupon to get a good price here.”

The business owners recently remodeled the office’s interior, updating its furnishings, wallpaper and carpet.

“We’ve also made some major technology advancements in equipment used for determining prescription and checking for eye disease, especially macular degeneration and glaucoma,” he said. “The technology we have for that now is just fantastic.”

The couple got their start in the eye care industry in Texas after graduating from the Ohio State University, teaching at the University of Houston starting in 1980 and establishing their practice there in 1982. A second location opened in 1984, but they soon looked to moving to another city, a process that took three years and eventually ended with a site on Eaton Avenue.

“It was fun to be back home,” said Andrea Moorehead, a Hamilton native. “We liked that Hamilton is a town of its own but has the benefits of being near larger cities.”

The had the building constructed to 2,250 square feet, larger than what they needed at the time but also expansive enough to accommodate future gains.

“We knew it was going to grow,” she said.

They credit the longevity of the practice to providing quality eye care and to the dedication of their current employees.

“It’s very tough to find great staff,” Andrea Moorehead said. “People comment on how helpful and knowledgeable they are. They’ve been a big reason for our success and they just do a great job for our customers.”

Teresa Lay of Hamilton said she’s been a patient of Hamilton Eyecare Center for nearly 24 years.

She said she likes that the Mooreheads treat her family of five like their own family.

“My kids have grown up going there,” she said. “I have a disease in my eyes and they have been very conscientious, very progressive about the technology that they’ve brought into their facility to really reach out and do the things that need to be done for their patients. They go above and beyond.”
