Hamilton City Schools: 5 things to know for back to school

Here are 5 things to know as Hamilton City Schools starts a new school year Monday, Aug. 14:

1. Mark these important dates this month

  • Monday, Aug. 14: First day of school
  • Friday, Aug. 18: First home football game, Fairfield at Hamilton, 7 p.m. at Virgil M. Schwarm Stadium
  • Saturday, Aug. 26: Skyline Chili Crosstown Showdown; Moeller at Hamilton, 7 p.m. at Virgil M. Schwarm Stadium

2. New food truck stopping by schools

The district’s first food truck will be making the rounds at Hamilton schools throughout the school year and at various after-school and weekend events.

3. District’s partnership with Miami U. gets boost

And a new $1.3 million “Upward Bound” federal grant will fund a growing partnership between Hamilton City Schools and the city’s Miami University regional campus.

“Our ongoing partnership with Miami Hamilton will benefit our high school students as they prepare to move on to their college aspirations,” said Superintendent Tony Orr.

4. New registration office, school

Hamilton City Schools last week opened its new Miami School center on Ross Avenue that includes for the first time a one-stop student registration office for the 9,700-student district.

5. Superintendent gets contract extension

The governing board of Hamilton City Schools bolstered Superintendent Tony Orr this month by approving a contract extension one year earlier than expected and lengthening Orr’s employment until at least 2020.
