Giant car show planned for Patriot’s Day celebration

Cars, music, and food will be on tap at Fairfield Twp.’s second Patriot’s Day celebration in Heroes Park.

The Saturday event opens at 10 a.m. and runs through 9 p.m., at the park, at the corner of Morris and Millikin roads.

There, visitors will find an open class car show, vendors, crafters, 16 food trucks, inflatables, kids games, and a beer tent operated by township firefighters to benefit their union International Association of Firefighters Local 5276.

Put together by Local 5276 and township employees under the direction of firefighter and car enthusiast Jason Agoston, officials are predicting 200-250 antique, classic, and other vehicles will be parked on the three acres of grass designated for the car show.

“It’s an open class show,’’ Agoston said. “We’ll have cars from the really old to a 1996 Chevy S-10 with a hopped-up engine. Last year’s Best of Show was a 1924 Model T.”

Once again Ross Twp.’s 1928 Ford Model AA fire engine will be on display.

Registration for the car show begins at 9 a.m. and costs $10 per vehicle. Awards will be given for Top 50, best of show, best motorcycle, and best vehicle as determined by dignitaries, including the township’s trustees, fire chief, and police chief.

A gas gift card will be presented to entrant who came the furthest distance for the car show.

“Last year was the first year and it kept growing because so many employees (got involved),” said Julie Vonderhaar, township administrator.

“The township employees come together so well and that’s how these things happen. I couldn’t be more proud.”

This year the township’s steel beam from the World Trade Center will be on display in tribute to the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. In remembrance of that, organizers are asking that an American flag be placed in or near each vehicle in the car show.

At noon the Star-Spangled Banner will be performed by JD Hughes from WGRR-FM.

The Animal Friends Humane Society will bring animals for on site adoptions. There will also be a collection bin where visitors can donate pet food, toys, and cleaning supplies for the animal shelter.

Proceeds from the event will be donated to the shelter, Agoston said.

From 3:30-5:30 p.m., After the Party will perform. Cassette Junkies take the stage from 6-9 p.m.
