It was an active morning through much of Butler County today as students returned to classes, including the 9,000-student Fairfield City Schools.

Tuesday marked the last, first-day of school for the district’s 87-year-old Central Elementary and neither school staffers nor parents showed much regret about leaving the the aged, deteriorating building at the end of the 2016-2017 school year.

A new Central Elementary is being built directly behind the current school, which is cramped, lacks air conditioning and has been in nearly constant repair for years.

“We are very excited but it’s a little bitter sweet I have to admit because there are some great memories that were made in this building,” said Principal Karrie Gallo over the roar of large earth movers molding the new school’s campus. “But we are so ready to make some new memories in the new building.”

Central school parent Brandon Rolfes dropped off his child at the school and said, “It’ll be nice getting into the new one and getting air conditioning and all the new stuff. It will be really nice to get the new (learning) tech, the smart boards and a lot more room.”
