Fairfield company moving headquarters to Newport

A company that provides laboratory services will move its headquarters from Fairfield to Newport, Ky., taking more than 20 jobs with it.

Ethos Laboratories, which works in toxicology, has had its headquarters at 3978 Mack Road Fairfield since December 2010, said Brian Kincaid, the owner of the business. It is moving because it located a larger facility on 29 E. Sixth Street in Newport.

However, Ethos is not moving out of Fairfield completely. The Fairfield location will turn into a research and development office after the headquarters moves to Newport, Kincaid said. That means about 27 jobs will be leaving Fairfield, he estimated.

“There’s a couple of components that played into it. One, we’ve been growing very rapidly over the last three years, and we’re getting to the point where we’ve outgrown our facility here” in Fairfield, Kincaid said.

“We had an opportunity to find a 30,0000-square-foot building, which is about six times the size of our current location in kind of an urban setting. That will be nice for the employees to be able to walk to the majority of the areas where they want to,” said Kincaid, who said the move should be complete in October.

The former Traugh Dairy facility in Newport turned out to be a good opportunity that presented itself and matched what the company was looking for, according to Kincaid.

The Fairfield facility, in turn, will have a small scientific staff of about three people, with potential for growth.

“Ideally, we’d like to grow the research and development side fairly rapidly, but all that’s going to be contingent on what we can discover and find in terms of novel testing options for pain management clinics,” he said. “It’s going to be looking at things that aren’t currently available to the medical community.”

Greg Kathman, Fairfield’s economic development manager, said although Ethos was not one of Fairfield’s major employers, “it’s disappointing whenever you lose any company of any size … that space hopefully will get back-filled by another company soon.”
