A Middletown woman is scheduled to be in court next week for arraignment on felony charges for allegedly taking money from a youth sports group.

Danielle Lucas, 38, of Middletown, was indicted Wednesday by a Butler County grand jury on two counts of felony theft for allegedly misappropriating money from the Middletown Youth Football and Cheer League.

Approximately $44,000 is missing and was allegedly taken while Lucas was treasurer of the organization from June 1, 2014 to Nov. 1, 2017, according to court documents and prosecutors.

A summons of the indictment was issued to Lucas on Thursday and she is scheduled to be arraigned May 7 by Butler County Common Pleas Judge Michael Oster.

Middletown police began an investigation in October when the organization’s new president, Quincy Hightower, reported the theft to detectives.

Maj. Scott Reeve said Lucas was the only person with access to the organization’s account, a practice that has since been stopped.

“We always tell these organizations that two or even three signatures should be needed to access accounts and money,” Reeve said.
