A Middletown man who is recovering from stab wounds will face charges after his release from the hospital, according to police.

Officers were called to the 600 block of Lafayette Avenue about 3:30 a.m. on a report of a stabbing, said Maj. Scott Reeve. Thaddeus Shields had suffered five stab wounds, including one to the chest.

An investigation revealed Shields, 46, came to the residence intoxicated, and an argument started with his girlfriend.

“He poked her and pushed he down,” Reeve said.

That’s when his girlfriend took action, he said.

“She picked up a knife and defended herself,” Reeve said.

Shields remains housed in a local hospital and is expected to recover. Reeve said he will face domestic violence charges when released.
