Police: Gun jams during apparent Middletown bar fight

The outcome of an apparent bar fight could have turned a lot worse if a gun hadn’t jammed.

Middletown police were told that Jeremy McGuire, 31, Middletown, after apparently getting into an argument last week with a customer, left the Phoenix Bar, 4309 Roosevelt Blvd., and retrieved a gun from his car in the parking lot. McGuire allegedly brought the gun into the bar, and tried to place a round in the chamber, but it jammed, according to a police report.

McGuire then took the gun back to his car to clear the chamber, police said. When Middletown police arrived, McGuire allegedly left the gun under the seat.

McGuire was charged with having weapons under disability, a third-degree felony; use of weapons while intoxicated, a fifth-degree felony; and falsification and physical control, a first-degree misdemeanors.

While searching McGuire’s vehicle, police found a black 9 mm handgun under the driver’s seat. There was a round openly visible in the chamber that had jammed and there was a magazine inserted into the firearm, according to police. McGuire told police he never was in the car and the gun wasn’t his.

McGuire told police he wasn’t involve in a fight, though he had blood on his lip. When questioned by police, McGuire allegedly gave them an incorrect first name.

He will have his preliminary hearing Jan. 7, 2019 in Middletown Municipal Court, according to records.
