Man steals thousands in cash from Middletown, Franklin Walmarts with crowbar

Police in Middletown and Franklin are looking for a man who walked into Walmart stores Thursday night and broke into cash registers, getting away with thousands of dollars in cash.

The suspect, described by police as a hefty black man wearing a green hoodie underneath a black puff coat with a green hat and black pants, entered the Towne Boulevard store at about 9 p.m. He walked around several departments, checking cash register drawers, according to a Middletown police report.

The man entered the store’s money services area where the lights were turned off. He then got on his hands and knees and popped open several drawers with a crowbar, according to the report.

Just 16 minutes after entering the store, the suspect left with nearly $6,500 in cash, police said. He left in a charcoal gray Chrysler 300 with chrome accents.

The man is believed to be the same suspect who entered the Franklin Walmart on East Franklin Street at about 8:30 p.m. the same night and used a crowbar to pop open a register drawer there, said Franklin Police Chief Russ Whitman.

The amount of cash taken in that incident was not disclosed.
