A Middletown teen is facing a felony charge after allegedly making an explosive and saying he had a plan to use it, according to police.

Officers went to a Winona Drive residence Wednesday afternoon on a report of a bomb threat.

Middletown Maj. Scott Reeve said a boy told a counselor that he wanted to set the bomb off in a field near other juveniles, but he had no particular target.

A small explosive device made out of two shotgun shells and a wick were located by the boy’s mother in the basement of the residence, Reeve said.

“It was more like a large firecracker,” he said.

Police officers and members of the Butler County Sheriff’s Office Bomb Squad safely detonated the device Thursday.

The 15-year-old is charged with possession of a dangerous ordnance, a second-degree felony, in Butler County Juvenile Court.
