One dead following officer-involved shooting in Fairfield

UPDATE @ 4:28 p.m.:

Fairfield police responded this morning to 9 S. Timber Hollow Drive for a domestic dispute between a couple who resided at the apartment building, according to a statement.

A woman contacted the department Friday morning asking officers to be “on standby,” Fairfield police spokesman Doug Day said.

When the man arrived, there was a confrontation between him and the responding police officers.

During that confrontation, the man produced a firearm and subsequently was shot.

The man was not identified. Police also are not releasing how many times the man was shot and whether one or multiple officers shot him, nor whether the man fired at police.

UPDATE @ 2:52 p.m.:

A resident in a neighboring apartment complex heard about 10 to 12 shots in rapid succession, and later saw a black man laying on his back.

Joseph Hopewell was in his apartment when he heard the shots, he told a Journal-News reporter.

He then heard a woman’s screaming.

Hopewell said he looked through the shrubs that separates his apartment complex and the Timber Hollow complex and saw a man he described being between his 30s and 40s on his back on the ground.

Fairfield police said they cannot comment on the neighbor’s account because it’s an ongoing investigation.

UPDATE @ 2:07 p.m.:

Three Fairfield police officers responding to a shots fired call at the Timber Hollow Apartment Homes complex will go on administrative leave after a suspect was shot dead, according to police.

Fairfield police spokesman Officer Doug Day said the shots fired call came in at 11:53 a.m. today. None of the officers involved were injured.

Details of the call have not yet been released as the investigation is ongoing.

The Butler County coroner is responding to the scene, which is between buildings 9 and 10 of the apartment complex.

The three officers, who are not yet being named, will be placed on administrative leave until the conclusion of the investigation, which is being conducted by the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation.

ORIGINAL STORY:

Fairfield police officers are investigating an officer-involved shooting in an apartment complex near Ohio 4.

Fairfield police spokesman Officer Doug Day said an officer shot at a suspect around 1 p.m. today at the complex on South Timber Hollow Drive. The complex is near Ohio 4’s retail area and north of South Gilmore Road.

The location is southeast across Ohio 4 from Jungle Jim’s International Market.
