7 big cases that will see action in Butler County courts next week

After two abbreviated weeks over the holidays, Butler County courtrooms will be busy the first full week of 2020 with several notable cases:

Trevor Fraley

A Madison Twp. man facing 101 felony charges involving child pornography is scheduled to be in court Monday for a pre-trial hearing.

Trevor Fraley, 24, of Dickey Road, was released last week on $500,000 bond with an ankle monitor. He was indicted Nov. 22 by a Butler County grand jury on multiple counts each of pandering sexually oriented matter involving a child and illegal use of a minor in nudity-oriented material or performance.

A trial date may be set in Butler County Common Pleas Judge Michael Oster’s courtroom.

William Powell

A trial for a Middletown man facing child rape charges is scheduled to begin Monday in Butler County Common Pleas Court.

William L. Powell, 69, of the 1300 block of Oxford State Road, was arrested in September 2018 and later indicted by a Butler County grand jury for three counts of rape, gross sexual imposition, two counts of unlawful sexual conduct with a minor and contributing to the unruliness or delinquency of a minor.

The alleged victim reported sexual abuse beginning at age 10 and continuing until she was 18.

Powell is free after posting a $405,000 bond

The trial is scheduled to begin in Judge Greg Stephens’ courtroom with jury selection.

Cameron Kyles

An 18-year-old man charged with aggravated murder and other felonies for the shooting death of a Middletown man will be in court Tuesday for a competency hearing on his his fitness to stand trial.

Cameron Kyles is facing aggravated robbery, aggravated burglary, felonious assault and having weapons under disability charges for the Oct. 12 fatal shooting of Michael Stewart II, 35, in Middletown.

Court-appointed attorneys Michele Temmel and John Kaspar requested Kyles be evaluated for competency. Butler County Common Pleas Judge Charles Pater is expected to consider the results of that evaluation at Tuesday’s hearing.

Johnanthony Boyd

A Hamilton man will be sentenced Tuesday in Butler County Common Pleas Court after pleading guilty to raping a child and filming that child in a sex act.

Johnanthony Boyd, 20, of the 1200 block of Vine Street, was arrested by Hamilton detectives on May 24 and booked into the Butler County Jail, where he has been held in lieu of $205,000 bond.

Boyd was indicted on nine counts of illegal use of a minor in nudity-oriented material, nine counts of pandering sexually oriented matter involving a minor and one count of rape. He pleaded guilty to one count of pandering and the rape charge in December. In exchange for the plea, the remaining 17 charges were dismissed.

Hamilton police and prosecutors said Boyd recorded a video of an 11-year-old child performing a sex act on him. All of the images were in Boyd’s possession on his phone, according to the arrest report.

Boyd faces life in prison with the possibility of parole after 10 years.

Joshua D. Lamb

A Middletown man charged with arson for allegedly setting a fire in an abandoned Middletown warehouse on New Year’s Day is scheduled to be in court Wednesday.

Joshua D. Lamb, 35, of Broad Street, was charged with the fourth-degree felony hours after the huge fire. He is scheduled to be in Middletown Municipal Court for a preliminary hearing.

Logan Henry

A teen accused of setting fire to a Hamilton warehouse that caused a massive blaze at the block-long building in July is scheduled to be in court Thursday for a pre-trial hearing.

Logan Henry, 18, is facing 13 counts including aggravated arson, arson and breaking and entering. He was 17 at the time of the alleged crimes and is being tried as an adult.

A trial date will likely be set in Butler County Common Pleas Judge Keith Spaeth’s courtroom.

Mezahn Demarco Amison

A Middletown man charged with the shooting death of a teen last month is scheduled to be back in court Thursday.

Mezahn Demarco Amison, 21, of Manchester Avenue, faces charges of murder and felonious assault in the shooting death of Zachariah Wallace, 17, of Middletown on Dec. 6. His bond was set at $1 million by Butler County Common Pleas Judge Jennifer McElfresh at arraignment.

A trial date may be set at Amison’s pre-trial hearing Thursday.
