911 caller: Man who died in Middletown was hit with baseball bat

A man called 911 early Wednesday for a neighbor who was “jumped” and unresponsive on the floor of a Wilbraham Road residence

Middletown police received a call about 3 a.m. that Daniel Mark Metcalf had been assaulted by a group of men in the 2900 block of Wilbraham.

When police and fire personnel arrived, Metcalf, 63, was dead.

The 911 caller said, “I need a life squad out here a Wilbraham apartments. He just got jumped and somebody used a baseball bat across his face.”

The caller said he was awakened by the incident and came outside to see what happened. Metcalf’s wife was performing CPR, the caller said, but the man was unresponsive.

“He’s not breathing or nothing,” the caller said.

Miamisburg and Dayton police aided in locating the individuals that participated in the assault, according to Middletown police. They are being questioned by detectives.

An autopsy was conducted Wednesday by the Butler County Coroner’s Office. Police are awaiting the autopsy results to determine charges.

“We just don’t know why he died at this point,” said Major Scott Reeve.
