One dead, one flown to hospital after SUV goes airborne in Monroe crash

One person is dead and another suffered life-threatening injuries Thursday after an SUV went airborne off state Route 63 in Monroe and crashed onto Interstate 75 below.

Mary Jo Hernandez, 44, of Cleveland, Tennessee, was headed west on state Route 63 in a 2016 Chevrolet Equinox around when around 3:20 p.m. the SUV went off the right side of the road while it was between the two ramps to northbound I-75, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol’s Hamilton Post.

The SUV hit a ditch and went airborne over the ramp from state Route 63 to I-75, crashing down onto the right lanes of northbound I-75 below. The SUV then went across the northbound lanes, hit the concrete median and went over it before coming to rest on the southbound side of the highway, the patrol said.

Hernandez was flown by CareFlight to Miami Valley Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Her passenger, Melvin D. Horton, 75, of Celina, was taken by ambulance to West Chester Hospital - UC Health, where he died.

The southbound lanes were closed at Ohio 63 along with the far left lane of I-75 North following the crash, according to the patrol’s Lebanon Post.

The highway patrol was assisted on scene by the Monroe Police Department, Monroe Fire Department and EMS, Liberty Township Fire Department, CareFlight Air and Mobile Services, Butler County Coroner’s Office and Jacob’s Towing.

The crash remains under investigation, the OSHP said.
