It will be the first time in his coaching career that Smart has been a head high school football coach.
Superintendent Larry Hook said he will not be teaching in the district and will coach under a non-teaching supplemental contract. he will receive nearly $6,500 a year.
Hook said the district does not have any policies requiring coaches to be teachers, saying “that would be tough in a small town.”
Smart is a special education paraprofessional who works in the Beavercreek City School District. He holds all certifications required by the Ohio High School Athletic Association.
His previous coaching job was as an assistant football coach at Oakwood High School, where he also served as special teams coordinator, defensive line and running backs coach, weight room coordinator as well as the school’s athletic site manager.
He also has been an assistant football coach at Belmont, Bethel and Beavercreek high school and a coach at various clinics over the years.
Smart has been active as an officer in the Miami Valley Football Coaches Association.
In addition, Smart has previously been the varsity shot put and discus coach at Beavercreek High School; head track coach at Beavercreek Middle School; and shot put and discus coach at Kettering Middle School.
He played offense and defense during his four years at Kettering Fairmont High School, where he was a varsity letter winner.
