Emergency crews were along the Great Miami River south of the Columbia Bridge in Hamilton following a report of a car submerged in the frigid waters Tuesday.

The call was made around 3:45 p.m. and responders were dispatched to the scene. Drones were in the air and firefighters were determining the best approach to access the vehicle.

A Butler County Sheriff’s Office water rescue team was called to the scene, according to Hamilton Police Public Information Officer Brian Ungerbuehler.

A license plate was not visible when emergency responders first arrived — the vehicle was completely under. Tire tracks heading toward the river are visible near the location, Ungerbuehler said.

At the time the car was reported in the water, the temperature in Hamilton was 8 degrees. There is some ice on the river.

Police did not say if they believed someone was inside.

No other details were immediately available.
