The honor is the first for any Butler Tech school administrator in the nearly half-century of the career school’s existence, said school officials.
Moeung “embodies Muse Machine’s belief in the transformative power of the arts in education,” said Ruth Reveal, executive director of Muse Machine.
“Through his unwavering support of educators and students, he demonstrates how the arts can enrich every facet of learning. Muse Machine is proud to honor the dedication and impact of Kimheart and the Butler Tech School of the Arts team with the Virginia Kettering Award,” said Reveal.
Moeung earned wide attention in 2022 for his unusually creative marriage proposal involving Butler Tech students joining him in a flash mob dance production at Hamilton’s Fitton Center.
School officials said: “As both a leader and a practicing artist, Kimheart exemplifies passion and dedication. From competing in the International World of Dance competition to performing in benefit concerts, his connection to the arts is personal and profound.”
Heather Campbell, innovative teaching and learning coach at Butler Tech, nominated Moeung for the award, praising the school administrator for his “openness to new ideas, willingness to collaborate with his staff, and dedication to enhancing the student experience through the arts.”
“I believe he deserves the Virginia Kettering Award. He exemplifies the kind of visionary leadership that the award is intended to recognize—one that fosters creativity, community, and growth in both students and educators,” said Campbell.
Kimheart was recognized for his support of the Secondary Schools Program, which serves middle and high schools across eight counties in southwest and west-central Ohio.
He shares this year’s award with Leah Coghlan, principal at Incarnation Catholic School in Centerville, who was recognized by Muse’s Preschool and Elementary Program team.
Moeung said “it was truly an honor to get this award, let alone be nominated.”
“I tell our young artists that they are powerful and can move people with their creativity. Receiving the award overwhelmed me with emotion and gratitude. It was a reminder of why I got into education in the first place, to help guide future generations,” said the Butler Tech veteran.
“The staff members at Butler Tech’s School of the Arts have been working so hard to create a brave space for young artists to thrive and I am so grateful for their hard work and dedication. It is a mission of mine to continue to champion the arts in the career tech space.”
