7 area events that will celebrate Women’s History Month

Miami University Regionals are sponsoring a number of events for Women’s History Month.

Middletown event topics focus on Women’s Firsts.

• March 14, First Lady Day: Film Showing, 10:05 a.m. in Room 012, and 1:15 p.m. in Room 111 Johnston Hall, Middletown campus. Excerpts from films chronicling the later life of Eleanor Roosevelt. Discussion: “Nellie Taft: America’s Rules-Breaking First Lady from Cincinnati,” noon, Gardner-Harvey Library, Middletown campus. Presented by Dr. Caryn Neuman.

• March 28, Miami University Middletown Book Discussion: The Movement of Stars by Amy Brill, noon in the blue chairs area, Gardner-Harvey Library, Middletown campus. The story of a mid 19th century Quaker woman whose life is transformed by the study of astronomy.

• March 28, Women’s Journey’s Women’s Voices: The Refugee Experience, 1:15 p.m. in Room 142 Johnston Hall, Middletown campus. This program offers the opportunity to hear the voices of women refugees living in Southwest Ohio. Invitations have been made to refugees from a variety of areas including Bhutan, Burundi, Myanmar, Iraq and Syria.

• April 4, First Women, 11:40 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Room 110 Thesken Hall, Middletown campus. Join a panel of women from various disciplines to talk about women who were first in their areas of expertise: medicine, sociology, bicycling, and being a warrior. Panelists: Susan Marine, Gina Petonito, Marsha Robinson and Alyssa Straight.

• In honor of Women’s History Month, enjoy the special display at the Middletown Campus Gardner-Harvey Library where there will be images of Women’s Firsts. The displays of First Ladies will be in Johnston Hall.

Hamilton event topics focus on Gender and Disability.

• March 15, Film Screening: Mindy Faber’s Delirium, 4 p.m in the Wilks Conference Center, Seminar 3 on the Hamilton campus. Defiantly humorous in tone, Delirium (1993) tells the story of Faber’s mother’s personal experience with mental illness. Pizza will be served.

• March 26, Keynote Lecture: Brenda J. Brueggemann, “What Her Body Taught: Women, History, Disability,” 4 p.m in Mosler Hall, Room 200 at the Hamilton campus. Dr. Brueggemann is Professor and Endowed Chair at the University of Connecticut and a founding scholar in the field of Disability Studies. Pizza will be served.
