A Springfield High School student is at the Butler County jail following a shoplifting incident Thursday night at Jungle Jim’s International Market.

Two 17-year-old boys were also involved in the incident. All three teenagers are accused of taking and/or eating snacks without paying for them and spraying shoppers with farting spray.

Devin Metcalf, 18, of Springfield, is being held on a $50,000 bond in the Butler County jail. He is charged with a felony count of robbery; and misdemeanor counts of carrying a concealed weapon and obstructing official business, according to police.

Metcalf was arraigned Friday in Fairfield Municipal Court and a preliminary hearing is set for Jan. 30, said Liza Kotlarsic, court administrator.

The 17-year-olds were each charged with theft without consent. They will appear Feb. 5 in Butler Cunty Juvenile Court for a hearing. The Journal-News is not identifying them because they are minors.

According to a police report, officers were dispatched to Jungle Jim’s around 7:14 p.m. Thursday on a report of a theft in progress by three males shoplifting.

The teenagers were confronted by police and the store’s loss prevention team. While walking to the loss prevention office, Metcalf tried to run away but was captured by police, according to the report.

During a brief struggle, a gun magazine fell out of Metcalf’s coat pocket. During an ensuing search a loaded, 10mm Glock pistol was found in his pocket. He told police he ran because he knew he would be in trouble for having a gun, according to the police report.

The value of the items stolen or eaten by Metcalf was $22.96; the 17-year-olds were $13.48 and $3.58 respectively.
