Man behind inaugural Middletown Comic Expo aimed to keep it low-cost and entertaining

Middletown native, comic book writer, and podcast host Tony Klapper has always dreamed of bringing a Comic Con to town so that kids and community members can experience it.

“For me, I thought having an affordable Con, where people can come to and get that experience in their home city, would just be good for the city overall. So, that’s when I approached Jeri Lewis, and said, ‘I think this would be a hit in Middletown,’”Klapper said.

“This will bring life to the other side of the classroom,” he said. “Middletown is a very sports-driven city, and there’s nothing wrong with that, but having that outlet for those that aren’t into sports, having something they can go to, and be a part of is huge for the city.”

In 2017, Klapper self-published his first comic book, “FiveStar.” In 2022, he signed with Freestyle Komics and Fivestar was then renamed “Kevin Terry is Fivestarunder its publication.

Klapper goes by the alias Mr. FiveStar on social media, and he is co-host of two podcasts, “FiveStar Fridays” and “What The Fig.” Both podcasts are part of the Agents of Geekdom Network.

Klapper will have a booth set up at Middletown Comic Expo and he will host a panel discussion. At the booth, he will be selling comic books, T-shirts, metal bookmarks, and prints. Columbus, Ohio-based Freestyle Komics will also have a booth at the expo and be a part of the panel.

“If kids come to the panel, we’ll be telling them, ‘You can do this.’ This is something you can do,” Klapper said. “It’s cool because kids are going to be able to see people on different levels when they come to this Con. They are going to see people that are just starting out, others that have had some success with it, and those that are really successful. It shows the whole spectrum of writing comics, what that means, and what it looks like.”

Klapper hopes Middletown Comic Expo is something that people look forward to for many years to come.

“I’m hoping one day this is an event people look forward to in Middletown and it becomes a staple,” he said.

There will also be special guest appearances by Craig Boldman, Darryl Banks, Michael Watson, Ryan Robinson, Victor Dandridge, Adam Fields, David Cain and many more.

“Comic Con conventions are just a place where you can let your fandom be out there. You don’t have to hide what you’re a fan of. You can be there, and you can embrace it with other people,” Klapper said.
