In a time when fewer and fewer comedians are releasing comedy albums on CD, Tim Wilson has maintained a steady release schedule. Most comics prefer to release DVDs or low-budget YouTube clips, and he’s gone there too, but even in this multimedia age Wilson still believes in the comedy album.

“It’s a great format, but the truth is major record labels expect a comedy album out of you about once a year,” Wilson said. “It’s a challenge because then you’ve gotta bear down and think of something.”

Of course, it helps that the Georgia native is a talented singer and songwriter, so he’s able to augment his jokes with humorous songs. In fact, Wilson actually pursued a conventional music career before turning to comedy in the mid-’80s.

“When I got out of college, I wanted to be a songwriter so I moved to Atlanta to try and write serious songs,” he said. “That didn’t really go anywhere at the time, and I wandered into comedy.”

Wilson — who performs at the Funny Bone Comedy Club Thursday, Sept. 17, through Sunday, Sept. 20 — released five comedy-music albums on the independent label Southern Tracks before signing with Capitol-Nashville in 1999.

Wilson released his major label debut, “It’s a Sorry World,” in 1999 and followed it up with seven more high-profile albums.

No release date is set for Wilson’s next album, but it’s a safe bet the man who penned irreverent gems like “First Baptist Bar & Grill” and “Booty Song” won’t be turning serious anytime soon.
