Firehouse Subs opens 1st of 9 planned restaurants in region

Chain looking for sites throughout southwest Ohio.

The first of nine Firehouse Subs planned for the Dayton, Springfield, Hamilton and Middletown areas opened April 24, in Huber Heights.

Charles Fryman — the area developer for Firehouse Subs who operates his own Firehouse franchise restaurant in West Chester — said he is actively looking for sites for new sub shops in Springfield, Middletown, Hamilton and other areas in west-central and southwest Ohio. Each new sub shop is expected to hire 35 employees.

The region’s newest sub shop at 8436 Old Troy Pike in Huber Heights has a seating capacity of 62 and employs 35. The father-son team of David and Seth Grusenmeyer of Huber Heights are the franchise owners of the new Huber Heights location, Fryman said.

Fryman said the second and third Firehouse Subs shops are planned for a new retail development under construction at Oakwood Avenue and Irving Avenue in Oakwood, and on Miamisburg-Centerville Road near Chick-fil-A in Washington Twp. Those restaurants are scheduled to open before the end of the year, Fryman said. The locations for the remaining six planned Firehouse Subs locations have not yet been selected.

Nationwide, the Jacksonville, Florida-based sub-shop chain opened 98 new restaurants and added 144 new franchisees in 2012 and now operates more than 550 locations nationwide. Boosted by a same-restaurant sales increase of 7.8 percent, Firehouse’s overall sales grew 35 percent from $285 million in 2011 to $385 million in 2012, company officials said.

The restaurant chain is entering a highly competitive submarine sandwich market in southwest Ohio, with relative newcomers such as DiBella’s and Jersey Mike’s expanding in the region alongside national chains such as Subway and Dayton-based chains that include Submarine House and Super Subby’s.

Firehouse Subs specializes in hot subs and also serves salads, chili and other sandwiches in an atmosphere that evokes an old-fashioned firehouse.

The Huber Heights Firehouse Subs will be open from 10:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and 10:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday. For more information, call (937) 938-9737.
