The retiring Middletown police chief said he wants to do something “less stressful” after 30 years in public safety.

Rodney Muterspaw, who earlier this week announced he was retiring in January, told the Journal-News he plans to obtain his real estate and pilot’s licenses.

“That’s something that I always wanted to do,” Muterspaw said.

Earlier, he said he’s planning to enter the private sector and that his next job will not be law enforcement-related or be as a police chief elsewhere. He also isn’t interested in entering the political arena, he said.

Muterspaw, 50, said he knew it was time to retire after he lost his “passion” for the profession.

“It was time to go,” he said. “I’m worn out.”
