A family-owned company that has been serving the needs of customers for more than 95 years is looking to hire in West Chester Twp. and Dayton.

Planes Moving and Storage, which started with a single truck in downtown Cincinnati in 1921, is now in its third generation of leadership. It has earned a recurring spot on the Deloitte Cincinnati USA Top 100 Privately Owned Companies for the last 20 years.

“We take personal responsibility for every move, so you can focus on what matters — settling in your new home,” said Clayton Huston, senior director of operations at Planes Companies. “We are constantly working to enhance our technology and moving services to ensure our capabilities are cutting-edge, and our customer experience is hyper-convenient and personalized.

“We work hard to maintain an open dialogue with our customers in the ways they like to communicate most.”

The company established locations in West Chester Twp. and Dayton in 1999. It employs 500 people, 150 of them in Butler County. It will be hiring as many as 10 employees in West Chester Twp. and as many as 20 in Dayton.

Typical starting base salary varies, with packers making $15 an hour to start, drivers making $17 and upwards depending on experience. Class A drivers can start at $23 to $25.

We asked Huston about Planes Companies’ hiring efforts. Here’s what he had to say:

Q: What’s the biggest challenge facing the company and other such similar companies, and how is Planes’ uniquely positioned to address that challenge?

A: “The largest issues having enough staff which limits operational capacity. Derived from employee turnover typically generated by low employee engagement, candidate selection and lack of training. What make us different is we have been voted Cincinnati’s top workplaces in the past six years, we believe in hiring the whole person and through intentional leadership and our award winning culture we give each individual hope and direction.”

Q: Some job seekers are concerned about the limits of advancement within a company or an industry. To what degree can your employees advance from entry-level roles to be promoted to greater positions within the company?

A: “We pride ourselves on challenging our team members to be the best versions of themselves our ultimate goal for all of our team members is to offer the ultimate promotion becoming a contractor were they share in the pleasures of being their own boss. We understand that driving a consistent message of team work and winning but not at the cost of another person is the key for sustainable success.”

Q. What’s the most prevalent roadblock that Planes encounters when it comes to hiring and what can jobseekers do to remedy that situation?

A: “Getting it, wanting it and the capacity to do it. We are a drug free workplace that also back ground checks, after those hurdles are overcome. The learning begins and if a person understands the physicality of the job, can deliver great customer service and has the desire to do it day in and day out the sky is the limit.”
