Remember the controversial big blue baby sculpture in Hamilton? It has a new home

But “Hatched Baby” now has a new home in La Crosse, Wisconsin, a city of about 52,000 located along the Mississippi River.

“Hatched Baby” by German artist Wolfgang Auer got quite a bit of attention when it was first installed in October 2015 at the arts center on Monument Street — some of it controversial.

The piece was seen by some residents as racist.

But Ian Mackenzie-Thurley, executive director of the Fitton Center, said at the time that the piece centered around the anxieties of parenthood and had nothing to do with race.

In its new Wisconsin home, “Hatched Baby” is located outside La Crosse City Hall.

Auer is an artist from La Crosse's German sister city of Friedberg, according to local media in Wisconsin.
