The sculpture “Hatched Baby” by German artist Wolfgang Auer was installed for several months from 2015-16 outside the Fitton Center for Creative Arts in Hamilton.

“Hatched Baby” has a new home.

The 9-foot-tall sculpture that depicts a big blue baby being hatched out of an egg was located for several months in front of the Fitton Center in Hamilton and then at Miami University Art Museum's Sculpture Park.

But “Hatched Baby” now has a new home in La Crosse, Wisconsin, a city of about 52,000 located along the Mississippi River.

“Hatched Baby” by German artist Wolfgang Auer got quite a bit of attention when it was first installed in October 2015 at the arts center on Monument Street — some of it controversial.

The piece was seen by some residents as racist.

But Ian Mackenzie-Thurley, executive director of the Fitton Center, said at the time that the piece centered around the anxieties of parenthood and had nothing to do with race.

In its new Wisconsin home, “Hatched Baby” is located outside La Crosse City Hall.

Auer is an artist from La Crosse's German sister city of Friedberg, according to local media in Wisconsin.
