Iconic Hamilton fountain, classic car both destroyed in crash

An iconic fountain at a busy Hamilton intersection was destroyed Tuesday evening by a classic car, according to Hamilton Police Chief Craig Bucheit.

The crash happened at about 5:35 p.m. at High Street and Martin Luther King Boulevard and sent one motorist to the hospital with minor injuries, according police.

“Sadly, 1800’s fountain, 1957 car both total losses,” Bucheit wrote in a Twitter post.

The car — a restored 1957 Buick — crashed as a result of mechanical failure, according to a police report. No citation was issued.

Jacob Stone, City of Sculpture president, said the fountain is badly damaged, but may not be destroyed. Stone, volunteers and city workers collected many pieces of the stone structure after the car was removed from the scene.

“It may be repairable,” Stone said. “Worst case, we will cast a new one that will look substantially the same.”

The fountain, “Hebe, Nymph of Streams and Brooks” was installed at the location in 2013, according to Journal-News archives.
