Police looking into possible connections between pharmacy robberies in Middletown, Dayton and more

Middletown police are working with other area law enforcement to determine if Friday’s robbery of the Central Avenue store is connected to others in the area.

Two Dayton men were charged within minutes of the robbery at Rite Aid following a short chase through the city.

Police say a black man wearing an orange hat, black jacket and gray sweatpants handed an employee of the Rite Aid pharmacy on Central Avenue a note stating, “This is a robbery” and listed what pills they were to give him.

The man left the scene before police arrived. However, a FedEx driver was able to give officers a description of the tan Pontiac seen fleeing the store parking lot, because the driver nearly struck his truck.

A Middletown police officer saw the tan Pontiac speeding along University Boulevard toward Manchester Road, but when the officer tried to stop the car, there was a brief chase. That chase ended about three miles away on Manchester Road near Marshall Road after the Ohio State Highway Patrol set up stop sticks, according to police.

Jamical Betts, 19, of Dayton, is charged with aggravated robbery and tampering with evidence. Betts is the man who went into the pharmacy and demanded the pills, according to police.

Cameron Redd, 19, of Dayton, is charged with aggravated robbery, driving under suspension, and a traffic offense. Redd was the getaway driver, police said.

Middletown police Major Scott Reeve said there is a pattern to pharmacy robberies in the past few weeks. Notes were passed, and the robbers demanded only drugs.

Rite Aid stores have been robbed in the past six weeks in Brookville, Dayton and Springfield. But Reeve said it is not just that specific store chain.

“There was also a Walgreens in Franklin,” he said. That store was robbed Aug. 9.

Betts and Redd will be arraigned Monday in Middletown Municipal Court.
