Oxford police have made an arrest in an apparent robbery Sunday afternoon that resulted in a shooting.

A 17-year-old male suffered a gunshot wound to the side at about 4:10 p.m., according to Lt. Lara Fening.

Emergency units were called to the 5200 block of College Corner Pike for the victim, but the shooting occurred at a car wash in the 5000 block of College Corner Pike. Fening said detectives are investigating the incident as a felonious assault.

The victim was taken by ambulance to McCullough Hyde Memorial Hospital in Oxford, then by helicopter to University of Cincinnati Medical Center. Fening said the gunshot victim is recovering.

Benjamin T. Hizer, 18, has been charged with aggravated robbery and is in the Butler County Jail for allegedly firing a shot at the victim, according to police. He was booked into jail Monday evening.

Hizer and the 17-year-old male had arranged to meet a third male at the Oxford Car Wash for an illegal drug transaction, according to police.

“During an attempt to rob the third male, Hizer fired a shot from a small-caliber handgun, which struck the 17-year-old male,” police said in a statement. The third person involved fled the scene and was later stopped and interviewed by police.

The investigation is ongoing and additional charges are possible.

A woman called 911 reporting her son had been shot.

“My son and his friend were just robbed and he got shot. He is shot in the side,” the caller said in the 911 call. “He is having trouble breathing.”

The woman rendered aid to her son, telling him to stay calm and take deep breaths.

“You are going to make it through this,” the caller told the injured teen.

When the dispatcher asks about the suspects the woman said all she knows is it was a black car with tinted windows.
