Urban Meyer on Wisconsin: One of the best teams in the nation

Buckeyes play Badgers on the road Saturday

The Ohio State Buckeyes turned the page from a 38-17 victory over Indiana as Urban Meyer met with the media on Monday at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center.

Here are some highlights from Meyer’s press conference:

• On playing at Wisconsin (4-1, 1-1) at 8 p.m. Saturday in Madison: “Outstanding. The typical Wisconsin. I think it goes back to coach (Barry) Alvarez and what he’s built up there. I think coach (Paul) Chryst, I don’t know him very well, but I can push play and see it’s one of the best coached teams in the United States of America.”

• On playing a team coming off its bye week two weeks in a row, with Penn State coming up next week: “Any time you go into a bye week you just be aware for a couple curve balls you haven’t seen. This late in the season you don’t see holistic changes to offense, defense or kicking.”

GAME STORY: Buckeyes overcome adversity

NOTES: Barrett: ‘I have to do a better job’

• On Ezekiel Elliott’s success with the Dallas Cowboys: Meyer said he received a text message from Elliott’s mom on Sunday and she keeps him updated because he’s busy watching film on Sunday.

“Very proud of him, and it doesn’t surprise me because we think he’s that good,” Meyer said.

• On the struggles of the passing game Saturday: Meyer said, “There were a couple mishits that usually hit, or when we do hit we’re dominating. If we don’t hit, we have to work a little harder. And just the style; we’re a pretty good run team. It’s always been that way. We’re kind of a shot team. When we hit shots, it’s really good. If it’s not, we have to find out why and get it fixed.”

• On penalty issues: “I don’t know why,” Meyer said. “I’m going to research that when I get out of here. I don’t think that’s been a huge problem, but that stat is a little alarming. What do I attribute that to? Depends on the penalties; we’ll figure that out.”

• Meyer named Tyquan Lewis the defensive player of the game against Indiana and Parris Campbell the top special teams player. Offensive linemen Pat Elflein and Jamarco Jones were the only offensive players to earn champion grades.
